Natalie at Great Woods
4 June '99

This was another in Natalie's superb performances, amplified by an energetic crowd. I had the pleasure of being about 10 rows back in the center (thanks Amy for the great seats). Natalie opened with Ophelia, showing off her signature moves. She continued San Andreas Fault and Break Your Heart. Then gave the most hysterical "Ode to Boston". It went something like, "Cranes, cranes, cranes, fuel tanks, and traffic jams. . . 10 billion dollars worth of cranes". Never has has an artist pegged it so right! =)~ Later in the concert, she continued to make comments on our "crane collection" and the "enlightened transportation system we were building".

Natalie continued on the piano with Wonder and very touching Beloved Wife. She also talked about being at the Kiss Concert tomorrow, how a "gentleman knight" would be there, and sang a few lines of Elton John. She went on to sing Gun Shy, and give a mesmerising rendition of Space Oddity. "Ground Control to Major Tom. . ." she sang, as she pointed at the ground. She finished the first set with Carnival, Unknown Song (mentions "Little Sparrow"), What's the Matter Here?, Dust Bowl Days, Life is Sweet, and Kind and Generous.

Of course, no Natalie performance would be complete without These Are Days, so that was her first encore. She continued with Jealousy. Then, she said "I searched far and wide, high and tall, to find a song that everyone knew, that you could all sing along to. . . and I came up with an old British Folk Song". With that, she went on to sing Wonderwall (one of my favorite Natalie covers, she sings it wonderfully). Then she did kind of a duet with the guitarist for In the Ghetto.

With a little coaxing from an energetic audience, Natalie will generally come out for a second encore. She came out to the piano and played absolutely the most touching performance of Seven Years. And she closed with a Neil Young song. . . and left with lots of flowers and gifts that people had given her throughout the show, including this pair of shades that someone gave her, which made her look so adorable.
