Natalie at Lilith Fair
11 August '98
The spotlight came on to reveal Natalie sitting at the piano, wearing a
royal blue and turquoise dress. She started playing the piano version of
Wonder, and the stage lit up with brilliant rainbow colors. Natalie
seemed to be engrossed in her playing, and the crowd watched in
mesmerized silence. Next she went into a lively version of the Worksong,
to which galloped back and forth across the stage. After that she played
Jealousy. During her enchanting performance of Life is Sweet, she stood
on a carnival-like soapbox, which was present throughout the show. Then
she invited Nadia Davenport to come on stage and sing Son of a Preacher
Man with her. This got the crowd clapping along, and then they went into
a very moving performance of Break Your Heart, which Natalie played the
piano for most of. After thanking Nadia, she went back up on the soapbox
and sung Ophelia while the spotlight remained on her the whole time.
Changing pace again, she sang a lively rendition of Carnival and an
intense Thick As Thieves. Passion radiated forth as she sang of catatonic
dances, and galloped across the stage once again. Then she bowed and left
stage. Yet we knew that she would come back out, and after a few minutes
of standing ovation, she came back out to thank Sarah for inviting her to
perform at Lilith Fair. The stage lit up to reveal a swing hanging from
the scaffolding, and she proceeded to sit on it rocking back and forth
and singing a passionate Kind and Generous. Her performance was one full
of that intense emotion, which audiences have come to love about her. I
definitely like her new album Ophelia
even more after seeing her at this concert.
